President's Reception

Last December 13th, Applewood was the scene of our first ever President's Reception. Peter Peachey, Dennis Mills, Bob Sage, Lawrie Crump and Rob Evans, representing all our Presidents over the entire 30 years of Applewood at its current location, played hosts to welcome over 30 of our "Applewood family and friends" and to thank everyone for their invaluable support of the House in 2009. Refreshments and cake were served and raffle tickets were sold for four Woodbine Racetrack buffet tickets. The raffle was won by our first Applewood President, Peter Peachey, who used to race horses at Woodbine. Also we formally dedicated Isabel Bishop's piano, which has returned to Applewood after 30 years through the generosity of Walter Bishop's Estate. Following the dedication ceremony, we enjoyed some excellent piano playing by local Grade 12 music student, Evan Pointner.

Woodbine Day-At-The Races

Last October 25, some 70 enthusiastic Applewood members and guests attended our annual Day-At-The-Races event at the local Woodbine Racetrack. This annual Fall fundraiser featured a sunny warm day, a great buffet, window seating overlooking the race course and a tour of the horse and jockey marshalling area. Peter Peachey, who originally brought this event idea to Applewood, circulated among our group with betting advice and took members downstairs to see the jockeys and their horses getting ready to race. While there were winners and losers at the betting wickets, most agreed that overall we all came out winners again at the racetrack.

Christmas In-The-Bag Craft Sale

On Sunday, November 29, we again hosted our annual Christmas-In-The-Bag craft sale - many thought it was our best yet! We were delighted to see Grace Procunier attend as well as many members of Applewood and the general public. This year we held a draw and one lucky member of the public won a beautiful gift basket of goodies put together by our member - Odile Sahl. Well done, Odile!

Environment Day

Environment Day at Broadacres Park

On April 24th, twelve Applewood volunteers joined over 100 community members in planting some 800 trees and shrubs around the forest just south of our House. Bob and Mary Sage, along with new volunteer Tina Leivo-Watts, manned the registration and refreshments tent while the rest of our intrepid Applewood group planted trees. The forest, which we informally call “Johann’s Forest”, was established almost 30 years ago by our member - Johann Fisch, who continues to plant trees there each year. In the future, we hope to see the City put up appropriate signage, walkways and benches there so the community can enjoy this amazing urban forest on Applewood’s doorstep
